ABOUT CHAD MALKUS
July 1, 2020
Chad Malkus was raised in Cambridge, Maryland on his family's farm on the Little Blackwater River. He graduated from Cambridge-South Dorchester High School in 1990, where he was Junior and Senior Class President, as well as Captain of the Varsity Soccer Team. In 1994 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina where he majored in Secondary Education & English. He taught for several years before enrolling in law school at the University of Baltimore School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor in 2001 and was admitted as an attorney to the Maryland Bar in 2002.
Chad practiced law throughout the State of Maryland for two decades, focusing in the areas of land use, corporate and real estate law, trusts and estates, and wealth preservation. He currently serves as a Vice President and Senior Fiduciary Advisor for a national banking corporation.
Chad has been an active and integral part of the Cambridge business and professional community for many years, serving on many Boards and Committees. The revitalization of Cambridge's historic downtown district as well as its scenic waterfront has been a driving passion. He served on the Board of Cambridge Mainstreet for many years, eventually becoming its President. He has also served on the Boards of the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on the Board of Sailwind's, Inc., which actively promotes and shares the vision of the redevelopment of our waterfront. At the State level, Chad served as President of the Board of Directors of the Maryland Alzheimer's Association.
For many years, Chad hosted the WCEM radio show, "ShoreLaw with Chad Malkus" which focused on business, wealth preservation, and life on the Eastern Shore. On an adjunct basis, he has taught at Howard University School of Law and UB School of Law. He currently teaches Trusts & Estates as well as Financial Planning at the Purdue School of Business at Salisbury University.
As an attorney in Dorchester County, he served as President of the Dorchester County Bar Association. He also acted as the attorney for Dorchester County Planning and Zoning. One of the efforts he is most proud of is representing Dorchester's own Layton's Chance Vineyard & Winery to craft a zoning amendment to allow for farm wineries. As a result, Dorchester County was named by the Maryland Wineries Association as the most business-friendly place to open a winery. For many years, he hosted his own radio show on WCEM Radio 1240AM called "ShoreLaw with Chad Malkus", which focused on business, wealth preservation, and life on the Eastern Shore.
For over fifteen years, Chad has been the founder and organizer of the annual Kite Festival at Sailwinds Park, which brings families from throughout the region to enjoy a festival of fun on the banks of the Choptank. He also successfully led the effort to rename Great Marsh Park after the late community leader Gerry Boyle.
Chad lives in the fifth ward of Cambridge with his husband Thom and his sons Lake & Fynn. Chad is proud to have been endorsed by retiring 5th Ward Commissioner Robbie Hanson. He is running for City Council because he wants to move Cambridge forward, from "potential" to reality.
